The Erie Canal's grand finale. In 1825 the canal's last obstacle was the Niagara Escarpment, and Lockport's answer was the Flight of Five, a staircase of five locks carved straight up the ridge. Boats climbed one side while boats came down the other, and the town that grew around them took its name from the locks themselves.
